PHD STUDENT
FOR »EFFICIENT PARTICLE AND SOIL SIMULATION AND COUPLING TO SYSTEM SIMULATION«

The department of »Mathematical Methods in Dynamics and Durability« works on modelling and simulation methods for the virtual product development of vehicles. A main topic in this regard is the simulation of the external interaction of construction and agricultural machines with soil and material. We develop and implement new modeling and simulation methods and apply and qualify these methods in projects with leading industry partners.

What we expect from you

  • Superior University degree in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or Physics
  • Competence in mechanics / technical mechanics, numerics and scientific computing
  • Advanced programming knowledge (MATLAB, C / C++, Fortran)
  • Experience in the field of modeling and measurement technology
  • Capability to document and present results in German and English

What you can expect from us
We are looking for a PhD Student in Applied Mathematics or Mechanical Engineering in the field of »Efficient Particle and Soil Simulation and Coupling to System Simulation«. In particular, the following tasks are addressed within the PhD project:

  • Development and implementation of efficient algorithms for particle and soil simulation in application scenarios for agricultural and construction machines, with a special focus on parallelization techniques. Existing in-house methods (DEM, CCP) will be developed further and improved.
  • Development and implementation of interfaces (e.g. aligned with the FMI standard) and co-simulation strategies for coupling particle simulation with system simulation (MBS). A special focus in this connection lies on simulation time and efficiency in combination with sufficiently high accuracy and numerical stability.
  • Numerical studies and analysis of the coupled simulation by applying various co-simulation concepts.
  • A focusing within the scope of the mentioned tasks is possible depending on the candidate's interest and qualification.
